Blessed to Be a Blessing

And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you [with abundant increase of favors] and make your name famous and distinguished, and you will be a blessing [dispensing good to others].   __ Genesis 12:2 (AMP)

Why does God bless us? God blesses us so that we can be a blessing to others. We are blessed to be a blessing! If we sow seeds of blessings to others, we can expect the harvest of unexpected blessings in our own lives.

To be “blessed” means to be empowered to have success in every area of life. When we are blessed, we are empowered to excel. To bless means to cause to prosper or succeed; to give something of value to another, or to add to that which is already good, making it better.

God blessed Abraham so that all families of the earth would be blessed through him. God does not just bless us for our own benefit, but He blesses us so we can help others. The reason God blessed Abraham is so that he could turn around and pass that blessing on to other people. We are blessed by God in order that we might be a blessing to someone else. It is not that we cannot partake in the blessing. Please don’t hear this as saying that we cannot enjoy any of the blessings we receive.  They are given to us, but they are not given only to us.

“We are blessed to be a blessing,” is not only true of our possessions, but it is also true of our talents. God has blessed many of us with amazing musical gifts, teaching gifts, administrative gifts, or gifts in some other area.

It is like the miracle of the five loaves and two fish. As we share the blessing we have, the blessing grows and multiplies until everyone present, including us, is satisfied and there are still huge amounts of leftovers (John 6:5-13). Allow God to use you to be a blessing to someone today!

Prayer: Lord God, I ask you to help me to be a blessing by sowing seeds of blessings to others in good deeds, encouraging words, the giving of my time, material blessings, or whatever you lead me to give to those in need. I thank You Lord because You alone are worthy to be praised. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
