Character Matters

And endurance produces character, and character produces hope,  __ Romans 5:4 (ESV)

What is character? Character is doing what is right because it is right, and doing it right even when no one is watching. Do you have character? Your character defines who you are. When you have character, you are the same when someone is watching and when no one is watching. You do what is right because it is right, not to get attention. If you have character, you do what you do from your heart. You do it because you want to please God. You want to please God because you love Him.

Our character determines our success! Having character is the number one quality one should have to be a success in life.

An employer can train a person to do a particular job, but if the person doesn’t have good character, the employer may wind up having to deal with many unnecessary problems.

Many people have gifts, abilities, and talents that will get them promoted, but they don’t have enough character to keep them there. Your gifts and talents are only going to take you as far as your character will keep you. You can’t go farther than your character will take you.

“No man can climb out beyond the limitations of his own character.”   __ John Morley

The dictionary definition of character is the mental and moral qualities distinctive to an individual; moral excellence; integrity. A synonym for character is reputation.

Proverbs 22:1 (CEB) says, a good reputation is better than much wealth; high esteem is better than silver and gold.

“Character is like a tree and reputation like its shadow. The shadow is what we think of it; the tree is the real thing.”  __ Abraham Lincoln

You can tell a lot about a person’s character during times of adversity. You can tell because during those times, the person has a choice whether to compromise his character or to do what is right. Adversity reveals a person’s character.

The greatest indicator of a person’s true character is success! Why? Because when a person becomes successful, he or she may become proud and arrogant, treat those around him with disrespect, and won’t help others.

“Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man’s character, give him power.” __ Abraham Lincoln

Prayer: Lord, I ask you to help me to have good character. Help me to please You and to do what is right because it is right. It is in the name of Jesus I pray. Amen.
